汤普生参与创办的细胞动力公司（Cellular Dynamics）正在使用iPS细胞培植心脏细胞，并将培植好的心脏细胞提供给研发心脏病药物的制药公司使用。该公司计划明年从具有特定民族背景或者特定基因特征的人身上提取iPS细胞，然后使之发育成心脏细胞以用于药物测试，任何可能给特定的基因或者特定民族的人带来副作用的药物或许都将被撤销。

　　汤普生表示，如果他们正在进行的研究取得成功，将会大大减少动物实验，最终可能不需要动物实验。另外，通过iPS细胞得到的人体组织甚至能够提供比动物更好的实验模型，这也可以让科学家更好地了解人体本身，或许将大大改变人类医药研究的面貌。
